What are your favourite films, tv shows, genres or filmmakers? I am hugely influenced by filmmakers like David Lynch, Harmony Korine and Werner Herzog. My favourite films range in genre but BLUE VELVET, GUMMO and NOSFERATU are three I couldn’t love more. My favourite television programme of all time is Twin Peaks, to which I have a quote tattooed on my forearm.
What does having your writing published in DIEGESIS mean to you? DIEGESIS has given me my first opportunity to have my words published in any format. I originally joined so I could help build the theory side of my degree, and it has been a pleasure to write about the films I am most passionate about. I love understanding how films work, and being able to delve a little deeper into why everything in film is done for a reason. There is always plenty to talk about with film and I hope I have the opportunity to talk about the films I love.
What is your writing process? It’s important to me to have a well-structured plan before I get writing. I’ll usually watch the film I am reviewing over and over, writing as many notes or keywords as I can and evaluating what I have later on. At times, I can be the most easily distracted person in the world, but, throwing on any old film relaxes me enough to get some work done. I reserve music mainly for writing screenplays, because certain tracks can help visualise scenes and situations clearer in film.
