DIEGESIS : THE UNCONVENTIONAL MAGAZINE OF FILM AND TELEVISION CRITICISM

Welcome to our second "flipped" print...

Beginnings and endings appear to be definitive moments in time. They are simple bookmarks that make sense of where we are and reassure us of what is to commence and subsequently conclude. Cultural moments, historical shifts and political uprisings are often given shape by the linearity of a beginning and an end because it helps to structure meaning and our understanding of events. Film and television narratives may appear to support this sensibility but, if you look a little closer, there is very little that is definitive about a beginning and an ending.

Each ending is, of course, another beginning - the start of something new - while each new moment cannot sever itself from the past it is emerging from. As for the comfort of linearity, time is multi-directional, always happening, always experienced and understood through a multiplicity of layered moments bouncing back and forth and in every direction. The loops of science fiction, the flawed recollections of narrators, the ubiquity of starting in media res, the editing of history, the compression of time and space are there to tell ourselves stories. They may all start and they may all finish but their beginnings and endings are not so straightforward. Instead, we are always in transition where beginnings and endings are invoked to help us to keep uncovering and questioning where we are and what it means.
